walter-dowdall

It is with deep regret we record the death on Monday past (20 February) of our good friend and highly respected colleague Walter Dowdall. Born on 14 April 1927, Walter attended Bangor Grammar School between 1938 and 1944.
While closely associated with the sport of hockey in Bangor for many years (he served as president of the Irish Hockey Union in 1976), Walter was a member of the BGS Medallion XV during the early 1940s.
A proud former pupil of the School, Walter served on the committee of the Old Boys Association (now Bangor Grammarians) for well over 50 years – he was still a member at the time of his death – and served two terms as chairman, in 1964/65 and again in 1991/92.
Walter was also the longest serving member of the Bangor Grammar School Board of Governors.
Bangor Grammarians chairman Geoffrey Miller, who said Walter would long be remembered as a committee stalwart, extended sincere sympathy to the family circle and to Walter’s many friends.
The funeral service will take place at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, Hamilton Road, on Friday (24 February) at 1pm, with interment afterwards at Bangor New Cemetery (Newtownards Road).
