THE 86th annual Bangor Grammarians’ dinner took place on Friday 13 November 2015 at the Marine Court Hotel on Friday 13 November 2015.

The total attendance exceeded 100, boosted greatly by a record-setting turn-out, numbering some 33, by the Class of 1975, marking 40 years since their departure from the school. The challenge to beat this total goes out to other year groups!  GeoffreyMiller

During the course of the evening Grammarians chairman Geoffrey Miller presented an award to Jack Cargo, representing his son Chris, who has brought great honour to his former school by gaining in excess of 100 caps for the Irish men’s hockey team.

Principal Elizabeth Huddleson spoke about a year of considerable progress at the school, but also reflected on the ‘lows’, including a number of pupils receiving treatment for cancer and the death of popular school nurse Doreen Beggs.

Concluding her speech on a decidedly lighter note, Mrs Huddleson turned the clock back some four decades and recalled the school reports of some members of the Class of 1975, who still serve the school through membership of the Grammarians or the Board of Governors (Messrs Peter Blair, Terence Bowman and Billy McCoubrey).

The guest speaker was political commentator Alex Kane, who blended his keen sense of humour with an incisive reflection on the Stormont parties seeking to reach agreement on the future government of Northern Ireland, but whose members still cannot bring themselves to share lifts, restaurant tables or even hold open doors for political opponents!

As ever the dinner finished with a rousing rendition, in Latin, of The School Song.
