Retired biology teacher Allen D Abraham passed away on 15 April 2019 at the Bloomfield Nursing Home in his native Belfast, following a long period of ill health. Prior to joining the staff of Bangor Grammar School in 1962, he had worked in the Middle East and hod taught for two years at Grosvenor High. Mr Abraham was educated in Dublin at the Masonic School and at Trinity College, where he graduated in 1957 in Geography, Geology and Botony As well as being Moster-in-Charge of Biology at Bongor Grammar School, he took on responsibility for Careers, at a time when the careers library contained little more than prospectuses for Queen's and Trinity He did much to develop careers advice in the School.
Mr Abraham was also in charge of Modern Studies, a post for which he was ideally suited given his interest in so many spheres, including meteorology, history and politics His enthusiasm for his subJect mode him a successful teacher and he was proud when former pupils went on to distinguish themselves in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine.
An able rugby player and cricketer in his younger days, he refereed and umpired school matches for many years However, he found the increasing pressures of the education system of the 1980s less to his liking thon the 'halcyon' 1960s, opting for premature retirement
in 1989. Until recent years Mr Abraham was o frequent and very welcome attendee at the Grammarians' Bangor Dinner.
