Mervyn Brown, who attended Connor House and Bangor Grammar School between 1951 and 1960, passed away peacefully in Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast on 14th September 2026. He was 83 and is survived by wife Barbara and sons David, Richard and Michael and the wider family circle.
On leaving school, Mervyn joined the Belfast Banking Company, later the Northern Bank, spending the first ten years of his service in branch banking. He subsequently served in various Head Office Departments before becoming Personal Assistant to the Managing Directors in 1976. After a spell as the Bank’s Corporate Planner, he was appointed an assistant General Manager in 1984.
Mervyn completed the Programme for Executive Development at IMEDE in Switzerland in 1986, becoming Head of Retail Banking in 1987. In 1990, he was appointed to a senior management role within the Corporate Banking Centre and later earned a Diploma in Company Direction from the University of Ulster. From 1994 until his retirement in 1998, he served as Head of Financial Services.
As a boy, Mervyn hugely enjoyed his time at Ballyholme Yacht Club, and as an avid Sea Scout was particularly proud of his acquisition of a Queen’s Scout badge. In adult life, Mervyn was passionate about rugby and golf, though he described himself as a “frustrated and untalented player” at his beloved Royal Belfast Golf Club. He was a committed member of Probus and remained actively involved with the BGS Old Boys' Association, regularly attending events and serving as the Grammarians’ Chairman in 1973/1974.
Mervyn passed away peacefully after a long struggle with prostate cancer. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
