Obituaries

James (Jim) Fleming, who attended Bangor Grammar School between 1951 and 1955, was a well-known local sportsman and a distinguished civil servant. Aged 78, he passed away at home on 24 October 2015.

Born in Belfast, he attended Grosvenor High School before entering BGS, aged 14, when his family moved to the town. He trained as an accountant, joined the Civil Service and ended his working career as financial director of the Social Security Agency. Sport in many forms was Jim’s pleasure. Initially he revelled in hillwalking, playing football for Bangor Parish and playing tennis at Downshire, where he also organised the weekly ‘hops’. Jim also played squash, being a formidably determined opponent. He was a key member of the Crawfordsburn Country Club team that won the Senior League 10 times.

As a senior, Jim won the Veterans’ Irish Open, the Ulster Veterans’ Open and the Munster Veterans’ Open, and served as president of the Ulster Squash Association.

He joined Bangor Golf Club in the early Nineties and was honorary treasurer for four years, his expertise, with the help of a team he recruited, putting the finances on a sound footing.

Roselawn was filled to overflowing for his funeral, a testament to the regard in which Jim was held. He is survived by his wife Marie, a former Lady Captain of Bangor Golf Club, sons James and Jervis and a wide family circle. Ian Alexander
